Exploring Bulgaria
Visiting only Sofia, the capital, does not provide a complete or realistic picture of Bulgaria. As a sprawling conglomerate of people from all over the country, Sofia often feels like it lacks a distinct character of its own. Much of the city suffers from poor maintenance and a lack of modern "eco-city" urban planning, with the notable exception of the central district built during the socialist era.
BUT
History is important - Bulgaria is full of it.
To find Bulgaria’s true charm, one must venture further. There are numerous beautifully maintained locations that offer a much more authentic experience:
Plovdiv: A must-see destination, especially the Old Town, which is renowned for its unique atmosphere and historic architecture.
Veliko Tarnovo: The medieval capital of Bulgaria. It is well worth the time to explore the city and its surrounding monasteries, which have been beautifully renovated.
Kazanlak: A hub for ancient history. Be sure to visit the museum and the Thracian Tomb, a remarkably well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site.
Varna: Home to the Varna Necropolis, where the world’s oldest processed gold artifacts and jewelry were discovered.
Beglik Tash: Located near the Black Sea town of Kiten, this ancient Thracian sanctuary features massive, mystical rock formations that offer a glimpse into the spiritual life of the Thracians.
Bulgarian history is vast and deeply layered—to truly appreciate it, you must look beyond the capital.

Visiter uniquement Sofia, la capitale, ne donne pas une image complète ou réaliste de la Bulgarie. En tant qu'agglomération tentaculaire regroupant des gens de tout le pays, Sofia donne souvent l'impression de manquer de caractère propre. Une grande partie de la ville souffre d'un manque d'entretien et d'urbanisme moderne de type « éco-cité », à l'exception notable du quartier central construit à l'époque socialiste.

Pour trouver le vrai charme de la Bulgarie, il faut s'aventurer plus loin. Il existe de nombreux sites magnifiquement entretenus qui offrent une expérience bien plus authentique :
Plovdiv : Une destination incontournable, en particulier la vieille ville, réputée pour son atmosphère unique et son architecture historique.
Veliko Tarnovo : La capitale médiévale de la Bulgarie. Il vaut la peine de prendre le temps d'explorer la ville et ses monastères environnants, magnifiquement rénovés.
Kazanlak : Un haut lieu de l'histoire ancienne. Ne manquez pas de visiter le musée et le tombeau thrace, un site du patrimoine mondial de l'UNESCO remarquablement préservé.
Varna : Abrite la nécropole de Varna, où ont été découverts les plus anciens artefacts et bijoux en or travaillé au monde.
Beglik Tash : Situé près de la ville balnéaire de Kiten, cet ancien sanctuaire thrace présente des formations rocheuses massives et mystiques qui offrent un aperçu de la vie spirituelle des Thraces.
L'histoire de la Bulgarie est vaste et complexe — pour l'apprécier pleinement, il faut regarder au-delà de la capitale.
