Exploring Bulgaria
Visiting only Sofia, the capital, does not provide a complete or realistic picture of Bulgaria. As a sprawling conglomerate of people from all over the country, Sofia often feels like it lacks a distinct character of its own. Much of the city suffers from poor maintenance and a lack of modern "eco-city" urban planning, with the notable exception of the central district built during the socialist era.

BUT

History is important - Bulgaria is full of it.
To find Bulgaria’s true charm, one must venture further. There are numerous beautifully maintained locations that offer a much more authentic experience:
Plovdiv: A must-see destination, especially the Old Town, which is renowned for its unique atmosphere and historic architecture.
Veliko Tarnovo: The medieval capital of Bulgaria. It is well worth the time to explore the city and its surrounding monasteries, which have been beautifully renovated.
Kazanlak: A hub for ancient history. Be sure to visit the museum and the Thracian Tomb, a remarkably well-preserved UNESCO World Heritage site.
Varna: Home to the Varna Necropolis, where the world’s oldest processed gold artifacts and jewelry were discovered.

Beglik Tash: Located near the Black Sea town of Kiten, this ancient Thracian sanctuary features massive, mystical rock formations that offer a glimpse into the spiritual life of the Thracians.

Bulgarian history is vast and deeply layered—to truly appreciate it, you must look beyond the capital.
